After growing up in the Northern Cape, I made my way down the N1 towards Cape Town. Here I discovered my passion for design and quickly started developing my skills.
I did an initial internship with Carel de Beer at Alchemy 1 in Stellenbosch where I was taught according to a pretty steep learning curve. I caught on, and knew that this is what I wanted to do. I enrolled in the Multimedia course at Damelin, and gained a British Higher National Diploma in Graphic design, as well as a diploma in Multimedia. I finished at the top of my class.
While studying, I did a number of internships as well as freelance work, both for existing agencies and myself. Places I did internships at include, The Formula (Tableview), Alchemy1 (Stellenbosch), In2One (Stellenbosch) and Snowball Effect (Stellenbosch).
After completing my studies, I went back to Alchemy1 to be a full time employee of their’s. There I worked closely with the Creative director / Owner and assisted him (mostly as his right-hand man) on various exciting projects. These included everything from animation, to light video editing, but mostly a whole lot of Graphic design.
Here I was lucky enough to work on projects like the CD covers for big South African artists, as well as documentaries on the biggest wine farm revamp in ages.
After finishing at Alchemy1, I moved on to Snowball Effect. Here I was hired as their head designer and I worked with a team of 2 other designers. We worked under our creative director: Storm vd Merwe. I did however realise that web was not quite my scene and I moved on.
My next move lead me to 3i Publishing in Cape Town. I was hired as a graphic designer and was responsible for the monthly cover, illustrations and a whole lot of articles for their Africa Telecoms Magazine. I worked hard and after a few months, I was promoted to senior designer, and before long I was made Creative Director of their creative department. Working closely with the editor and clients, on briefs, brainstorms and conceptualizing of different projects. I also handle the traffic and HR of my department.
